Enrollment for 2016-2017 School Year

We are still accepting applications for new kindergarten, first, and second for new families who wish to attend School of the Madeleine during the 2016-2017 school year.   New families may now download the applications from our website, pick one up at the school office or from the container on the front security gate, or call the school office (619-276-6545) to have one mailed.  Please remember that a Catholic education is a gift for LIFE!

Tim McGraw’s new song, “Humble and Kind,” encourages listeners to show kindness and compassion toward others through small acts that, in turn, make a large impact.  Scholastic Book Clubs recently held a contest requesting entrants to write a three-or four-line stanza which might inspire others to act humbly, kindly, and compassionately, just as this song invites us to do.  As part of their poetry unit, all sixth grade literature students were asked to write a poem for the contest.  Poems from all students who desired to enter were mailed last month.  Sean’s poem was chosen as one of ten winning poems in the country!  He received a guitar signed by Tim McGraw.  Mrs. Gonzalez eagerly awaits her signed Tim McGraw photograph!   Congratulations to Sean and thank you to all of our sixth grade poets who entered the contest!

Please remember if you want to qualify for the discounted parishioner rate for tuition for the 2017-2018 school year, you must start immediately using weekly church envelopes.  If you pay monthly or bi-monthly, you must turn in an empty envelope to demonstrate your consistent attendance and participation in the parish.  This must be done for one-year prior (July to June) to establish a supporting parishioner status.  See the tuition scale for further information.

Congratulations to Jack Kaderabek for receiving the Mary Lou and Jerry Holmberg Saint Augustine Book Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship is given to an eighth grader to offset the cost of textbooks at Saint Augustine High School.  Mary Lou and Jerry Holmberg were Mia Lloyd’s parents and faithful supporters of Catholic schools and especially Saint Augustine High School.  The Lloyd family presented this scholarship to Jack at the eighth grade awards and luncheon on Thursday, June 2.

Every time parents shop at Office Depot and provide School of the Madeleine’s identification number, our school will receive 5% of the total purchase price in gift cards.  These gift cards can be used by our office to purchase duplicating paper or other office supplies.  If you are planning to purchase back to school supplies this summer or if you own your own business and shop at Office Depot, please consider using Madeleine’s I.D. number.  Our school number is 70013744.

New to the Madeleine website is an AMAZON Smile button.  By simply clicking on the Amazon button, you will earn funds for the school every time you shop!   Shopping at Amazon through our website is exactly the same as it would be if you went to Amazon directly.  However, if you do it through our Madeleine web page, the school will receive a percentage of your purchase (anonymously).  Free to you, INVALUABLE to Madeleine!

You can still shop through the Online Mall on our Madeleine website.   This includes many other stores that offer a percentage back to the school.

Please pass on this information to ALL your family and friends who shop at Amazon.

Many corporations recognize and are willing to support private education through a matching gift program.  Your employer can advise you if your company will match your gift—often as much as two or three times your contribution.  We encourage you to ask your company’s personnel office for matching gift instructions and/or forms. Please make sure you list School of the Madeleine as the institution you want matching gifts to go to and not the Diocese of San Diego or St. Mary Magdalene.

Planned gifts, such as bequests, trusts, life insurance, assignment of a beneficial interest, endowments, life estates, are wonderful ways to give for the future of Catholic education at School of the Madeleine!

Johns Hopkins University Talent Search

School of the Madeleine had 53 eligible 7th and 8th grade students for the 2016 Talent Search sponsored by Johns Hopkins University.  Participation in this search is voluntary after meeting the eligibility requirements.   Congratulations to the students who qualified and took part in this program.

Also, congratulations to Matthew Rowland, one of our eighth grade students.  He earned “High Honors” during the 2015-2016 academic Talent Search because of his superior scores in mathematics and reading compared to most college-bound seniors on the SAT College Placement Exam.  Representatives from the Johns Hopkins University Center stated that Matthew’s results were outstanding compared to the very small select group of students who were invited and qualified to take part in this Talent Search.  Matthew received a special certificate commemorating his achievement and was honored at a regional awards ceremony this spring.  Congratulations, Matthew!

What is "Box Tops for Education"?
It is a program created by General Mills that has resulted in over $200 million dollars of rebates back to schools as of 2007. The program was expanded in 2002 to include products from companies other than General Mills. For more details please see the informational website:

How will this benefit the School of the Madeleine and our Children?

For each "Box Tops for Education" label that we collect, our school will receive 10 cents from the program. It may not sound like a lot, but as an example, Andover Elementary School in Minnesota has earned over $37,000 since 2002.

What do you need to do?

1. Look for the "Box Tops for Education" label, which can be found on products that many of us use every day. (See list)

2. Cut the label out and save in an envelope or zip lock bag labeled with your child's class number.

3. Send the envelope/zip lock bag with your child to school during the last week of the grading period. Box Tops can be dropped off in the collection container located outside the office.

What will the reward be for the class with the most labels?

Not only will the school receive monies from General Mills, but the class who returns the most labels at the end of each grading period will receive a special treat.

If you have any questions about the program, would like to volunteer as a label counter or provide treats for our winning class please contact one of the following parents:

Julie Grooms at julgrms@yahoo.com

Kristen Suva at ksilva@sandi.net or

Jen Micbna at jmichna@san.rr.com

So, get out those scissors and start clipping!
